On Saturday the 11th of September 2010, I waited outside Wembley Stadium from 2am to see Muse (with support from I Am Arrows, White Lies & Biffy Clyro) Now why did I wait for that long? Because Muse is one of my all time favourite bands who I’ve followed intently since 2001 when I heard “Bliss”. I have seen Muse 10 times now and every time they have astounded me, though for some years it has been getting increasingly difficult to get to the front due to their ever growing popularity. This year I was determined to stick it through and get to the front, even if it meant me camping out all night (and so I did). The wait was long, but it passed easily with sugary snacks and the help of the others insane enough to queue this early. It was cold but I did manage to get ‘some sleep’ (about 2 or 3 hours on and off) my sleeping bag was nice and cozy though as advertised, I am sure it can keep me alive even at -10 degrees centigrade.

Evidence 2am is not early enough to be at the front of the queue for Muse

When we finally were granted entrance to Wembley at around 4:30, we were ushered in and urged not to run, though that did little to stop some. When I finally got to the front of the Stadium I was shocked to see so many already on the barricade. I think they let some others in slightly earlier (grumble grumble, moan moan). Either way I managed to get a position just left of the catwalk (Chris Wolstenholme’s side)

At 5:45pm the first band on the line up was up “I Am Arrows” (fronted by former Razorlight drummer, Andy Burrows). I Am Arrows played to a luke-warm crowd but to their credit were pretty good, far better than Dirty Pretty Things, who took to the same stage back in 2007 supporting Muse). I really enjoyed their set, but lacked the energy to show it, as I had very minute amount of sleep. I Am Arrows played a relatively short set.

Then at 6:45 the White Lies took to the stage, they sound a bit like Joy Division, which is good if you like Joy Division, however as much as I’d like to like Joy Division the only song of theirs that I can ever really remember is the one everybody remembers “Love Will Tear Us Apart” and listening to White Lies is a bit like listening to Love Will Tear Us Apart on repeat. However I can tell that other people liked them, and it could be down to my lack of sleep that I couldn’t fully appreciate them, but I did almost fall asleep twice when listening to them.

At 7:45 Biffy Clyro took to the stage, blasting us with a breath of fresh air, adrenaline scented air with ‘That Golden Rule’, needless to say I was now fully awake. Seeing Simmon Neil (lead vocalist) with his new look was at first startling and slightly comedic, with his bleached blonde hair and beard, it actually suited him a bit even if he does look a little like a creepy Santa Clause. The crowed were chanting “Mon The Biff” and you could tell everyone was having a good time. Everyone in the front of mosh pit was jumping up and down rocking out to Biffy. They did really well to coax the crowd out of a slumber and work them up for the headliner of the night MUSE.

By 9:45 the audience was fully primed for the days main event. Muse took to the stage with the glorious Uprising, but not before a parade of people dressed as demonstrators against an unjust society succumbed to fear in a George Orwell 1985 fashion police state. As soon as Uprising kicked in, the rain came, and it couldn’t have been more perfectly timed. It was a refreshing rain, and as soon as the song had stopped it seemed the rain also stopped.

The crowed were electric and went mad as soon as the first chords of Bliss were played, it was divine. And it didn’t stop there as the drum beat kicked in for Citizen Erased the crowds reaction was, enormous. I screamed at the top of my lungs in amazement, as did everyone around. The set was littered with fan favourites (such as Map Of the Problematique, Ruled By Secrecy & Take A Bow) along with the big hits (Supermassive Black Hole, Feeling Good, Starlight and the Bombastic Knights of Cydonia).

They paraded up and down the catwalk a number of times, most notably during ‘MK Jam’ & ‘Undisclosed Desires’, where the platform moved more towards the centre of the stadium and rose above the crowds. Matt utilizing his Keyboard, and Dom’s Christmas tree light covered drums, and Chris with his awesomeness rotating on the platform. This was most defiantly a night to remember. On a sad note Dom said at the end of the gig “thank you very much, unfortunately it’ll be the last one for quite a while, we’ll be back for sure” I hope it won’t be too much longer before they return to the UK.
